The Center for European Studies (CES) offers the European Studies and European Integration MSc programmes. These are interdisciplinary programmes that intend to capture the multi-dimensional character of European integration and the enlargement process. The first programme, which approaches European integration from a wider perspective than the latter programme, comprises courses that include historical processes on Europe and covers all European issues. It has a research emphasis and is based on thesis writing. The European Integration programme, on the other hand, focuses on the politics and policies of the European Union with the aim of training qualified staff required by the EU accession negotiation process. The design of this programme concentrates on the dynamics of the adaptation process that Turkey is undergoing as part of the EU integration process and provides a deeper understanding of Turkey-EU relations. All students in the "European Studies" are expected to complete four compulsory courses on different aspects of European integration, i.e., economics, politics, institutions and law, and state-society relations in Europe, and a seminar course led by the thesis supervisor of each student. In addition, three elective courses should be taken before proceeding to the thesis-writing stage. Those students who choose not to write a thesis can fulfil the requirements of the programme by completing three more elective courses complemented by a final research project. The "European Integration" is a non-thesis programme with two different modules - emphasizing the political aspects of European integration in the first and economic-social policies in the second - specifically designed to help form a specialist staff in different institutions and establishments. The programme requires the completion of three compulsory courses on law and institutions of the EU; the process of European integration; and accession and negotiation process and methods in the EU; plus seven elective courses and a final project.
